In 2011, Tunisia experienced a sharp increase in unauthorized migration to Italy. Boats regularly sank in the Mediterranean. Some reached their destination. They were the ones who kept the dream alive. Others disappeared.
I imagined the dish that an Italian restaurant in Lampedusa — geographically the closest point to Tunisia — might have served.
Its speciality would be “Spaghetti Pescatore al Nero di Seppia.”
The catch of the day is a skull.
Real small fish are attached to the skull, forming a kind of mask around the eyes. Tattooed on the back: “Viva Italia.”
It is served with real black spaghetti — like squid-ink pasta, a speciality of southern Italy.
